What you should know about
H1N1 Flu

Right now in Chicago, the risk for H1N1 flu is low. Case numbers peaked in early November of 2009, and have been declining steadily ever since. In fact, on August 10, 2010, the World Health Organization declared that the global pandemic of H1N1 is over, and the world is now in a post-pandemic phase.

Nonetheless, H1N1 continues to circulate at low levels throughout the Chicago area and elsewhere---and when it comes to influenza, it is never time to let down our guard. We at the Chicago Department of Public Health take H1N1 flu (and all strains of flu) seriously, and we call upon all Chicagoans to do the same.

The new 2010-11 flu vaccine is now available on a limited basis. Check with your doctor or other regular health care provider to schedule your 2010-11 flu vaccination. If you do not have a doctor, vaccinations are available for a reasonable fee at many retail pharmacies across the city. Flu vaccinations will also be available at no charge from the Chicago Department of Public Health, starting in mid-October as we kick off our annual fall flu vaccination effort. A schedule of dates, times and sites will be announced soon.

Vaccinations are safe, effective and convenient. They are the best way to fight the flu. The 2010-11 flu vaccine offers protection from the three flu strains most likely to circulate this year: A-California (the same H1N1strain as last year), A-Perth and B-Brisbane.

Generally speaking, everyone in the community----from babies age 6 months and up----should get a 2010-11 flu vaccination, if they have not already. The best time to get vaccinated is October and November---or earlier if vaccine is available. However, if you miss the big flu shot drives in October and November, please remember that vaccine should still be widely available, and that it is never too late to get vaccinated and protect yourself and your family from the flu!
