Oppose BP's Plans to Dump in Lake
Michigan
Lake Michigan is in serious trouble, and your help is
needed to save it. That's why Senator Dick Durbin and
Congressman Rahm Emanuel have set up an online
petition to protect our lake.
British Petroleum has announced plans to dump up to
1,584 pounds of ammonia and 4,925 pounds of
industrial solids into Lake Michigan every single
day from a BP refinery in Whiting, Indiana -- a
massive setback to decades of work to clean up the
lake.
Senator Dick Durbin and Congressman Rahm
Emanuel will be meeting with BP CEO Bob Malone on
September 4. He needs to know that the millions
his company has spent to burnish its reputation as an
environmentally sensitive oil company is about to go
down the tubes.

Hispanic Illinois State Law
Enforcement Association Benefit for Police Officer
Victor Estremera
On Nov. 29, 2005, Police Officer Victor Estremera of
the Waukegan Police Department was on patrol
responding to a Domestic Violence call with lights and
siren activated when he was hit head on at the
Intersection of N. Lewis Ave. and Glen Flora while
stopped in Waukegan. He suffered injuries to both
knees and was taken to a local hospital. After months
of therapy, he needed surgery to repair his ACL and
medial meniscus in March 2006. He has never
recovered from this surgery because of swelling and
pain to the right knee.
On February 1, 2007, he had another surgery to repair
additional damage to his ACL. During this surgery,
they shaved off parts of the two main knee bones and
made a notch in the bones where the ACL was getting
pinched. They also shaved part of the knee in the rear
and repaired the lateral meniscus by removing 45%
that was damaged.
On June 27, 2007 and after several trials with different
medications to treat the pain he had an epidural pain
catheter inserted into his spine to numb the knee area
so he could progress in his therapy. If the pain returns
when it is removed, he will be immediately scheduled
for a permanent implant. His doctors have informed
him that he will need a complete knee replacement in
the next couple of years depending on his
activity.
Victor has not been back to work for over 1-1/2 years
and has been in various legal battles with his
department. Because of these battles, Victor's
treatment has been delayed and has affected him and
his family permanently.
The Hispanic Illinois State Law Enforcement
Association is requesting your support to help Victor
and his family. We will be hosting a benefit on behalf
of Police Officer Victor Estremera.
