I received a note last week from Sonya Wilson,
Executive Administrative Assistant to Mario
Lavorato. In addition to being a columnist, he is
the Director of Marketing, Communications and Public
Relations for The GAZETTE Newspaper (a near west
suburban publication). He frequently uses the
Chicago Latino
Network e-newsletter as a tool for his
weekly column.
Mr. Lavorato has been in ill health recently, although
he continues to pen his column from his hospital bed.
He recently celebrated his 30th birthday
(March 10) and unfortunately spent it in the hospital as
he did this past year for Christmas and New
Years.
I wanted to extend a get well wish to him...Jaime

First Regional Latino
Policy Summit
An invitation-only, complimentary breakfast program to
release a Latino Policy Agenda for the State of Illinois
during this pivotal presidential election year.
As the demographics of the United States and the
Chicago region continue to shift, Latinos have an
increasing role in contributing to the prosperity of the
nation and the region. Latinos United undertook an
extensive community engagement process to develop
the Latino Policy Agenda, one that articulates a vision
of contribution and inclusion in the areas of
community development, youth, education, immigrant
integration, and other key issues as a potential
national model.
The Latino Policy Agenda report will provide a set of
well-documented strategies that Latino leaders in the
region can follow to present a more unified policy
strategy for our community. While including issues of
immigrant integration, the Policy Agenda will also
focus on policies and resources needed to promote
the health, education, and social well being of the
children of Latino immigrants to ensure that they can
contribute fully to the vitality of the region now and in
years to come.
In addition to the announcement of the Latino Policy
Agenda for Illinois, the program will also feature two
panel discussions on key national and regional Latino
issues with names including Illinois State Senator
Willie Delgado, Chicago City Clerk Miguel del Valle,
Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund
President and General Counsel John Trasviña,
National Institute for Latino Policy President Angelo
Falcón, Erie House Executive Director Ric Estrada,
Mujeres Latinas en Acción President and CEO Maria
Pesqueira, and Ruben Chavez of the Federation of
Michoacano Clubs of Illinois.
Your attendance at the Summit will help forge a link
between a regional and national Latino policy agenda,
and will help us engage other Latino leaders in policy
and advocacy work across the nation.

In addition to increasing community awareness about
Casa Central, the Telethon raises money to support
Casa Central's programs. In coordination with the

a list of Telethon sponsors. The space offers visibility
to small and large businesses that support the
televised event. The "Page of Hope" will appear in
several editions of Hoy in early April prior to the
Telethon. Each year, Casa Central reaches over
20,000 people from throughout Chicago without
restriction or regard for race, religion, gender, ability to
pay, or ethnicity. Its unique bilingual/bicultural
approach and locations make the agency's 23 social
service programs most convenient and valuable to
many Hispanic families. Casa Central's
bilingual/bicultural programs build an important bridge
to help Hispanics overcome barriers to progress and
make positive contributions to their families and
